We went to New York to check out all of the tourist sites this past weekend. We had alot of fun in Central Park and Times Square. We also went to 30 Rock, Statue of Liberty (be prepared to stand in line - it took 4 hours), Empire State building, and Grand Central Station. We also went and saw Spring Awakening on Saturday night.

Foley Football - 11/9

I went to the Foley football game with Dad, Uncle Floyd, and Adam on Friday night. It was the first round of the Alabama state playoffs. Foley beat Sidney-Lanier 54-12. Go Lions!!!

Birthday week in New York

I went to New York for a work related seminar last week. I stayed at the Barclay Hotel all week. It's in a great location (48th and Park Avenue), within walking distance to most of the top tourist spots. I went to Rockefeller Center and watched the taping of the Today show - weekend version (no Meredith and Matt but did see Lester Holt). I also walked to Time Square, Radio City Music Hall, and Grand Central Station.

My favorite restaurant was Asia de Cuba. The decor is very hip and the food is a fushion of Asia and Latin favorites. It's recommended that you share the portions, so I was able to try quite a few things. The lobster mashed potatoes were my favorite. The best part of the trip was seeing Wicked at the Gershwin Theatre. It was awesome. I can't wait to go back and see more shows.

I brought Kirk two t-shirts - NY Giants and a NY Jets. Of course, he liked the J-E-T-S, Jets, Jets, Jets shirt. I'll probably be wearing the Giants one as pajamas.

San Antonio

Last week, I spent a few days in San Antonio, TX on business (and a little bit of site-seeing). I stayed at the St Anthony. One morning, we went to Market Square to have breakfast tacos and sweetbread from Mi Tierra Cafe & Bakery. As soon as I walked in, I thought about how my niece and nephew would love the bright decor.

I also went to The Alamo. I wanted to see if my opinion of it had changed since 1999. It hasn't. If you blink, you'd miss it.

I forgot to take pictures of the Riverwalk. I walked up and down it many times & even had a few meals along side it but what can I say I wasn't in 100% tourist mode.

I tried a few new restaurants while I was in SA: Rita's on the River and Waxy O'Conors Irish Pub for lunch. For dinner, I ate at The Palm, Yokonyu sushi, and Paesano's. All quite tasty.

Is it Fall yet? I can't wait.... I love the cooler weather, football season, the World Series, new TV shows, my birthday, and the holidays. It has been a busy Summer for us! (and apparently a busy Spring since we have not posted in forever.... ) I am planning to try and blog more but we'll see how that goes. Note that I do have an excuse - I have been traveling alot - New Orleans twice, Memphis six times, San Antonio twice, and Jackson once, Dallas once, and Gulf Shores once.

My parents and Melissa visited us on March 17 – March 21. This was their first trip here, so needless to say, we had a lot to see…… Day 1: We purchased the two-day pass on the Tourmobile buses. We started at the Arlington National Cemetery (JFK Burial Site, Tomb of the Unknown Solider, Arlington House) This was the coldest day, so we decided to do inside things that afternoon – Smithsonian Museums: Postal Museum, Air & Space Museum, and National History Museum. After dinner, we drove to the Marine Corp Memorial. Day2: Washington Monument, WWII, Korean War, and Vietnam Memorials, Jefferson, Lincoln, and FDR Monuments. Lunch at the famous (just kidding) Department of Agriculture, Tour of US Bureau of Engraving and Printing, We spent a lot time on benches waiting for the Tourmobile. It always seemed to be leaving the bus stop before we could get there. Our first tour guide, Melvin was the best. Day3: Tour of the White House with Richard, Ford’s Theatre, The House where Lincoln Died, The Spy Museum, Dinner with Richard Chasez (mom’s first cousin). Day4: Tour of the Capitol, Library of Congress, Supreme Court, Holocaust Museum, National Cathedral Due to the increase security measures, you have to get tickets for the Capitol, US Bureau of Engraving, Holocaust Museum, and to take the elevator to the top of the Washington Monument. Dad was a trooper and took the Metro in early each day to get us tickets. The tickets are on a first-come basis for time slots later that day. One person cannot get multiple tickets at the Capitol, so we had to do some old fashion line cutting. We tried to be inconspicuous and use some of the tips from the spy museum but you know how that goes…. Fortunately, no one called us on it. Tips: -Metro is great. (Don’t forget that you need your ticket to leave the station & don’t jump the turnstile) -Don’t ask the guide at the “House where Lincoln Died” if this is where Lincoln lived. He will tell you in a “non”-condescending way that Lincoln was the President, so he lived in the White House. -Planetarium deals with planets not plants. -By Day 3, you are so tired your brain stops working. Happy Hour and Nooshi sushi

We've been working a lot lately and we're really tired. Nonetheless, we finally got out on the town this month. We decided to go check out the Heart of Dixie Happy Hour at the Eighteenth Amendment bar in downtown DC. It was put on by the Alabama and Auburn DC alumni associations. Apparently they do it once a year.

The place reminded me a lot of college. Very dark and very loud. We had to yell to talk to everyone. The place was mostly Alabama alumni like I thought it would be. Makes sense. There aren't a lot of farms up here in DC.

The best part of the whole deal was that they had a tab set up so we got free beer! What a city!

Afterwards I took Kristy out to a sushi place that I used to check out near work called Nooshi. Those of you who read the New Orleans blog (which I imagine is everyone) know that this is still a relatively new thing to me. The funny thing is that I'm actually acquiring a taste for it. Those following at home will be happy to know that I have mastered the chopsticks.

You all know what's coming next.

We shared some shrimp tempora roll, soft shell crab roll and spicy crunchy shrimp roll. Also had a little General Tso chicken. Everything was awesome.

I'm really getting in to this sushi thing. I just couldn't contain my excitement.

Kristy enjoyed the food but most of all she is a huge fan of their lemonade.

We really like Nooshi but it's a long way from our apartment. If we're back in the area any time soon we'll check it out again.

Bar night at Dr. Dremo's

On the old blog I talked a little about my love for my XM radio. The best part about it is I get to hear the Ron and Fez show middays. It's been my favorite show for as long as I can remember. They are based out of New York now but they used to be based right here in Northern Virginia. Because of that, there are a ton of fans right here in DC. Back in the day they use to organize Friday night bar nights on a pretty regular basis. When the show left they stopped.

I thought it would be cool to meet some fellow fans so I organized a bar night at Dr. Dremo's on Friday. At first it was just going to be a few people but then they mentioned it on the show and we had a good group show up. There were quite a few regular show guests who stopped by. It was fun to see their faces after hearing their voices so much over the years.

The two on either side of me are Bobo and Kathleen from the Bronx. They're both regular callers and guests on the show. Both are too funny.

Meeting new people

One of my biggest regrets about our time in New Orleans is that we didn't take advantage of the opportunities to meet people. While we were there the blogging community made a real effort to get to know each other. They were nice enough to link to our blog on the wiki they set up.

For whatever reason we never made the effort to go to any of the events they set up and that was a mistake.

Now that we're in DC we're gonna make a real effort to get out more. We're lucky that the Girata's are already here and we've had a lot of fun hanging out with them. They introduced us to a bunch of their friends a few weeks back at one of their regular card nights. Good times.

In addition to that I intend to join the University of Alabama alumni association. They have an athletic league with competitions set up with other school's alumni. I hope I can make the softball team or something. If I make it I'll be sure to put up a picture or two. I'll know more about all that in a few weeks.

It's snowing!

It took a few weeks but we finally got our first snow!

It's not much right now. They're saying it's supposed to be one inch. Everyone we talked to wasn't very impressed. It was pretty cool to us though.
